The prompt

Break this task down into smaller steps.

Tasks rot on a list because they’re too big. The fix isn’t more discipline — it’s smaller tasks. alfred_ does the decomposition.

What alfred_ does

  1. Reads the original task title and any context from linked email or notes
  2. Breaks it into 3-8 specific sub-tasks, each small enough to act on
  3. Suggests an order if there are dependencies
  4. Optionally identifies the smallest first step you could do in the next 15 minutes

Tips

  • Ask for the next step, not the whole tree: “What’s the smallest thing I can do right now?”
  • Specify a sub-task size cap: “Break into pieces no bigger than 30 minutes each”
  • For unclear scope: include the link to the source email or note so context flows in

Variations

  • Decompose 'launch the new pricing page' into 5-10 sub-tasks.
  • What are the actual steps to do this?
  • Turn this into a checklist.
  • Split this into a first step I can do in 15 minutes.

Best for

Tasks that have been on your list for weeks because they're too big to start, or new commitments where the scope isn't clear yet.
