How Do I Find Important Requests Buried in Slack Threads? The Ask You Scrolled Past on Tuesday.

Slack's own tools find what you were mentioned in. Requests in threads, DMs and busy channels slip past them. The searches worth saving, and how to ask what is waiting on you.

Quick answer

How do I find important requests buried in Slack threads?

  • Start with Slack's own views: Activity for mentions and thread replies, and Later for anything you saved
  • Save two searches: your handle in the last week, and each client channel for the last week
  • Those find where you were named. They miss a request in a DM you read on your phone, or a question in a channel that did not mention you
  • alfred_ reads the channels and DMs you are in and answers "is anyone in Slack waiting on an answer from me?", alongside your email

Slack is built to move on. A request there has no state: it is not open or closed, it is just further up.

On Tuesday afternoon someone asked you a question in a client channel. It was a normal message in a busy thread. You saw it between two calls and meant to come back. By Wednesday there were sixty messages below it.

Email at least keeps the ask in a list. Slack is a river. A request there is not open or closed. It is just further up.

What Slack gives you

Slack featureWhat it findsWhat it misses
Activity (mentions and threads)Messages that @mention you, and replies in threads you are inA question that did not mention you
Later (saved items)Whatever you chose to saveAnything you did not save
UnreadsMessages you have not openedEverything you read on your phone and did not answer
SearchAnything, if you know what to look forYou have to know what to look for
All four are worth using. None of them tracks whether a request was answered.

Searches worth saving

Slack search takes modifiers. These three cover most of it:

  • @yourname after:2026-09-24 for everywhere you were mentioned in the last week. Change the date.
  • in:#client-channel after:2026-09-24 to read back through one client channel for the week.
  • from:@client-contact for everything a specific person wrote.

And one habit: when you read a request you cannot answer now, save it to Later. That is Slack’s version of flagging an email.

Where the manual way stops

Every method above depends on one of two things: you were mentioned, or you remembered to save it. The request that hurts is the one where neither happened. You read it, it was not addressed to you by name, and the channel moved on.

Asking who is waiting on you

alfred_ is an AI personal assistant for work. Connect Slack and it reads the channels and DMs you are in, so a question someone asked you there does not slip.

Asked by text: two things in Slack are waiting on you, with the messages they came from.

It answers with the message itself, who sent it and when, so you can go straight to it. And because it also reads your email, the same question covers both:

  • “Is anyone waiting on an answer from me?” returns Slack and email together.
  • “Catch me up on #harbor-facilities since Monday.”
  • “What did the team decide about the walkthrough?”
Asked in chat: what the team decided, read from the channel, with the two messages it used.

From found to handled

  • “Remind me about Luis at 4” sets a reminder.
  • “Add a to-do to send the signed SOW” puts it on your list, with a date if you give one.
  • You answer in Slack yourself. alfred_ does not post as you.

What it does not do

It reads the channels and DMs you are in, not the whole workspace. It does not post, react or mark messages read. Plans start at $29.99 a month with a 7-day free trial; setup is on the Slack page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find important requests buried in Slack threads?

Use the Activity view for mentions and thread replies, save anything you cannot answer now to Later, and keep a saved search for your handle. To catch requests that did not mention you or that you already read, connect Slack to alfred_ and ask who is waiting on an answer from you.

Is there a tool that tracks action items across email, Slack and Teams?

alfred_ keeps the list of emails waiting on your answer and, when you ask, tells you who is waiting on you in Slack and Microsoft Teams. Any of them can become a to-do with a date.

Can AI connect related conversations across email and team chat?

Yes. Because alfred_ reads your email and your Slack or Teams conversations, a question such as "what did the team decide about the Harbor walkthrough?" is answered from wherever it was discussed, and a question about a client pulls the email thread and the channel together.

Does alfred_ read private channels and DMs?

It reads the channels and DMs you are in, and nothing else.

Will it answer in Slack for me?

No. It does not post as you. A message goes to Slack only when you send it.

Can I catch up on a channel without scrolling?

Yes. Ask "catch me up on #general since Monday" and it summarizes what was said.
