If you run client work from your inbox, the question about any new assistant is a plain one: will it catch the email you were about to miss? Here is what OpenAI’s dots does with email and calendar, taken from OpenAI’s own announcement and pricing page.
What happened
OpenAI introduced dots on September 29, 2026, at its Developer Day (Axios). In OpenAI’s words, dots are “always-on agents built to handle everything.” Each one runs on GPT-6 Astra, has its own cloud computer and browser, and keeps working toward the goals you give it between conversations. It connects to more than 4,000 apps through ChatGPT plugins.
Axios framed the launch as OpenAI’s answer to Meta’s Muse, a personal agent that “has gone viral and moved markets since its release.”
What dots does with email and calendar
A dot reaches your inbox and calendar through the apps you connect in ChatGPT, and you choose which ones it may use through ChatGPT’s app controls. On ChatGPT Business, the pricing page lists connections to Google Workspace and Microsoft 365.
- In the background, a dot does what OpenAI calls “proactive research” with read-only tools: per OpenAI, they “can’t send messages, change app content, or control your browser or computer.”
- When you ask it to act, built-in rules decide what it does on its own and what it asks you first. Custom Rules let you allow specific actions, require approval for them, or block them. Some sensitive tasks, such as changing a password, always stay with you.
- Where you reach it: ChatGPT on desktop, web and mobile, plus Slack and Microsoft Teams. Texting is “coming soon.”
OpenAI’s worked examples are a developer, a product launch, a scientist, a sales lead and a content creator. The one example close to an inbox: an early tester’s dot noticed he had forgotten to invoice a publication, prepared the invoice, and sent it after his approval.
What it costs
Prices as listed on OpenAI’s pricing page on October 28, 2026:
- ChatGPT Pro: from $100 a month, with three usage tiers. Your first dot is included.
- ChatGPT Business, Premium seat: $100 a seat a month billed annually, or $125 billed monthly. The pricing page lists dots for Premium seats.
- Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare: a beta, available when the workspace admin turns it on.
Conversations with your dot don’t count toward your ChatGPT usage limits. Tasks it starts in Codex or ChatGPT Work do, and OpenAI says plans include extended limits for deeper work in the first month after launch. dots is rolling out in what OpenAI calls eligible markets.
If you run client work over email
A dot works toward the goals you set for it, across whatever apps you connect. If the problem is client email slipping, alfred_ is built for that job.
alfred_ is an AI assistant for client-facing teams, and each person on the team gets their own. It reads your email across up to six Gmail, Outlook and IMAP accounts, flags the emails that need your answer, and keeps one list of the replies you owe and the replies you’re waiting on. It sends a morning brief by email or text, and you can ask it for things on the web, on iPhone, or by text. Nothing is sent until you approve it. Plans start at $29.99 a month, and teams are on one bill.
