AI Agent vs AI Assistant
Definition
An AI assistant is software that responds to user prompts and helps with tasks on demand (ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot). An AI agent is software that pursues a standing goal autonomously, taking multiple actions across tools without per-step prompting (alfred_, Lindy). The terms overlap, but the practical distinction is who initiates each action — the user, or the software.
The cleanest definition
Both terms describe AI software that helps with work. The cleanest distinction:
- AI assistant = responds to prompts. You initiate; it helps. ChatGPT, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini, Siri, Alexa.
- AI agent = pursues goals autonomously. You set the goal once; it acts continuously across multiple steps and tools. alfred_, Lindy, Bond, ChatGPT Operator/Agent mode, Devin.
The dividing line is who initiates each action — the user, or the software.
A simple example
Take “manage my inbox” as the desired outcome.

Both produce email drafts. The AI assistant produces them one at a time when you ask. The AI agent produces them across your whole inbox without you opening any email.
Why the terms get used interchangeably
Three reasons:
- The same product can be both. ChatGPT is mostly an assistant in normal use, but ChatGPT Operator / Agent mode is genuinely agentic — it browses the web and takes multi-step actions. The same model, different mode.
- Marketing language is loose. Many products call themselves “AI agents” because the term sounds more sophisticated, even when behavior is closer to assistant.
- The line is genuinely fuzzy at the margins. A multi-turn conversation where ChatGPT uses tools (web search, code execution, file analysis) edges toward agentic behavior even though the overall pattern is still prompt-response.
The practical test: does it run when you’re not looking? If yes, it’s behaving as an agent. If no, it’s behaving as an assistant.
Why the distinction matters when buying
For knowledge workers picking AI software, this distinction usually maps to “which problem am I solving”:
- Buy an AI assistant when the bottleneck is things you’re already doing slowly — research, writing, analysis, coding. ChatGPT or Claude reduces the time per task.
- Buy an AI agent when the bottleneck is things you’re not doing at all because they pile up — email triage, follow-up tracking, daily briefings. An agent handles the recurring workflow continuously, not the one-off tasks.
Most professionals end up with one of each: an assistant (ChatGPT or Claude) for thinking work, plus an agent (alfred_ for email-and-brief, or Lindy for custom workflows) for the recurring stream.
A useful rule of thumb
If the value proposition is “I can ask it questions” — it’s an assistant. If the value proposition is “I forgot to ask it and it did the work anyway” — it’s an agent.
